ELECTRIC HI LIFE
To many Ghanaians, Jewel Ackah’s name IS synonymous with feelgood, old-school highlife dance music, not least the anthem of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress, composed and performed by Jewel at the behest of the government, to much acclaim.
This superb Asona disc, though, is carefully titled: because although it’s unmistakeably Burger-style, it also harks back to the old school brass-band highlife sound in more ways than one. Kwaku Fela’s loose’n’funky percussion style and the jazz-infused horn section make this a true keeper, with a sound all its own- even among other Burger discs.
