NANAMON

A living history of modern Ghana music, Eric Agyemang started his musical career in 1963 with pop outfit The Midnight Movers, in 1972 moving on to Doctor K Gyasi’s Noble Kings and in 1973 to the legendary Sweet Talks. A gifted arranger, Agyemang would transform the sound of Ghana’s most celebrated band from one of ‘straight’ Highlife to a punchier, horn- laden, soulful vibe, ready-made for the dancefloor.

A chance meeting in the early 1980s at a private party in a north London suburb between Agyemang and Asona founder Anthony Frempong resulted in an immediate recording contract.

Go-to track is undoubtedly the whole-of-side 2: a sikyi -style Burger highlife medley. Look out for trumpeter Pat Akrasie’s beautiful and moving solo inserts throughout.
